After tying Canada's all-time goal scoring record against the United States on Saturday, Lille striker Jonathan David opened up regarding his future in an exclusive interview with 'The Athletic'. The 24-year-old was expecting to leave the club after 5 seasons of consistent performances in Ligue 1 - 105 goal contributions in 190 appearences for Lille, as club President Oliver Letang also confirmed in June that David was available for a transfer away from the club.
The Canadian was linked to several top Premier League teams throughout the summer, Chelsea in particular - with whom David's camp held talks - along the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United. Nevertheless, a move never materialised. “It just didn’t happen," David said. “There were a couple of offers and we just didn’t finish the deal, that’s it". “I spoke to a couple of teams. I spoke with coaches. But ultimately made the decision to stay,” he told 'The Athletic'.
Despite the Premier League being on his radar, he points to a stay in Lille as a viable option with ongoing contract negotiations. “What am I waiting for? I guess now it’s easier to say. I’m in the last year of my contract. Eventually my contract is going to run out". “Right now we’re speaking with the (Lille President Oliver Letang) about a possible extension … We’ll see how that goes," he explained.
That said, David equally insists he is not picky about his future destination. “I’m open to anything". “I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best league in the world. And for me it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything and every league has its challenges," he added. Inter Milan, Juventus, and Barcelona are amongst other clubs intrested in David outside of England, as per 'Tuttosport'.
With an uncertain future path, Jonathan David chooses concentrate on the present. The striker will be involved in Canada's fixture against Mexico on Tuesday, where he will look to score his record-breaking 30th goal.
