Paulo Fonseca's season could already be over after only five games in charge of 'OL'. The Portuguese could be handed a seven-month suspension after losing his cool in Olympique Lyon's dramatic 2-1 win at home to Brest on Sunday.
Fonseca was left outraged after referee Benoit Millot went to the VAR to review a potential last-minute penalty for handball, as he shouted in the official's face before going head-to-head with him. Lyon midfielder Tolisso stepped in to separate the pair before Millot showed Fonseca a red card and decided not to give the penalty.
Admitting that his conduct at the Groupama Stadium was wrong, the 51-year-old told 'DAZN': "I apologise for this gesture. I shouldn't do that. Football makes us do bad gestures. The match was very difficult. Playing against Brest is always difficult, they are a physical team, they defended a lot. These are very important points."
But Fonseca's apology is unlikely to save him from a lengthy ban. According to 'RMC Sport', the former AC Milan head coach's outburst may fall under the French League governing body's (LFP) regulations regarding 'intimidating or threatening behaviour' towards officials. If found guilty, Fonseca will be subject to a seven-month ban.
Lyon captain Lacazette, who netted the winning goal late on, also commented as he said: "It's part of football. I think he'll regret this gesture, but we'll see what the disciplinary committee says. It's tension. There are a lot of questionable choices. When you live the match, sometimes you can do things. We're all behind the coach."
Referee Millot also spoke on the incident in an interview with 'L'Equipe': "He (Fonseca) rushed toward me with an intimidating attitude and I decided to send him off directly," he said. "There was, it seems, a slight contact with the nose. It was intimidating, you can hardly imagine such aggressive attitude from a professional coach."
