Vinicius' interview on 'CNN' continues to get people talking in Spain. "If the situation with racism in Spain does not improve before 2030, the World Cup would have to be moved to a different location. I hope that Spain can evolve and understand how serious it is to insult someone because of the colour of their skin," the winger said.
His statements have angered fans, players and authorities who consider his statement about the 2030 World Cup after playing in Qatar to be hypocritical. Madrid mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida is one of those who have reprimanded him.
"I hope he rectifies immediately. We are all aware that there are racist episodes in society and that we have to work hard to put an end to them. It is unfair to Spain and to Madrid to say that we are a racist society.
"Being an extraordinary football player doesn't mean he can't screw up and this time he has screwed up. Vinicius has the vast majority of Spanish society on his side to fight racism, but we are not on his side when he calls us racists because I can't accept it. I can't accept it," insisted the mayor of Madrid.
"You should value the fact that you live in one of the most open and welcoming cities in the world. Nobody is excluded here. The fact that he has had to put up with certain regrettable episodes does not justify him branding practically the whole of Spanish society as racist and saying that the 2030 World Cup should not be held."
Finally, he insisted on his demand to Vinicius: "He has to rectify, apologise. Know that when there is a racist episode he will have us all on his side, but he will not have us all on his side when he says that we are racist because that is not true. When you make a mistake you have to rectify it."
