Real Madrid issued a statement on Monday, following the eight-month jail sentence and two-year ban from football stadiums for three fans convicted of racist insults against Brazilian Vinicius Junior at Mestalla, in which they assured that the club "will continue to work to eradicate any racist behaviour".
"The conviction is the first of its kind to be handed down by criminal courts and tribunals. Together with Vinicius Junior, Real Madrid has acted as the private prosecutor in these proceedings and shall continue to work to protect the values of our club and to eradicate any racist behaviour from the world of football and sport," the club published on its website.
A conviction for the events that occurred on 21st May 2023 in which all the parties - Prosecutor's Office, La Liga, the Spanish Federation and Real Madrid and Vinicius - reached a plea agreement which they agreed to in a quick hearing and which provides for the conviction of the accused for a crime against moral integrity with the aggravating circumstance of hate. "In view of the acknowledgement of the facts by the defendants, we adhere," said the Hate Crimes Prosecutor Susana Gisbert, who was followed in the same terms by the other representatives.
In addition, the letter and the apologies of the three defendants addressed to Vinicius, Real Madrid and the rest of the people who felt denigrated and offended by their behaviour led to a reduction in the sentence. As a result, the initial sentence of twelve months' imprisonment was reduced to eight months and the three-year ban from stadiums where LaLiga or Spanish Federation matches are held was reduced to two years.
