If there is one player who has been a perfect fit in the Champions League, it is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian giant had a spectacular debut at Salzburg, continued his incredible form at Borussia Dortmund">Borussia Dortmund and has not faltered at Manchester City either.
Last season, Haaland finished as the competition's top scorer with 12 goals, although five of those goals came in the same game against RB Leipzig in the second leg of the last 16. However, the Leeds-born player has not scored since the second leg of the quarter-final against Bayern Munich. A game in which he missed a penalty, but sealed the Sky Blues' place in the semi-finals by scoring Manchester City's only goal in a 1-1 draw in Bavaria.
In the first leg of the semi-final against Real Madrid, the Scandinavian striker was perfectly stopped by Rudiger and in the second leg, although he was much better, he came up against the woodwork and an unbeatable Courtois. Haaland also failed to score in the final and to those 3 games last season he has added another 2 without a goal this season. He started with an assist and a shot against the woodwork against Red Star Belgrade and was unable to beat the Leipzig's goalkeeper on Wednesday.
Although his scoring average is still above the goal-per-game mark (35 goals in 32 games: 1.09), the Manchester City striker is already on his worst run in Europe. Haaland made his debut with a hat trick in Salzburg-Genk on 17th September 2019. He scored in his first 5 Champions League games and only came away empty-handed in the 6th, a 0-2 Liverpool win in the Austrian city.
Finally, since his arrival at Manchester City, his worst run of games without a goal was also 2 to the 5 he is currently on. He scored back-to-back goals in the group stage against Sevilla (2), Borussia Dortmund (1) and Copenhagen (2 in half-time). He went scoreless both against Borussia Dortmund (he played only half a game) and in the first leg of the round of 16 against RB Leipzig, after which he went on to score 3 times, against the East German team (5) and Bayern (1 in the first leg and 1 in the second leg). Since that match on 19th April 2023, he has not scored again.
