Everton took control of the match with a dominant first half, leading 2-0 at the break. Beto opened the scoring with a fantastic shot inside the box after a series of rejections from a corner. Doucoure then doubled Everton's advantage, heading in a rebound from a brilliant save by Onana. Manchester United struggled defensively, with their weaknesses clearly on display. In the second half, Bruno Fernandes gave United hope, scoring a stunning free-kick from the edge of the box after Doucoure's handball on the initial free-kick. Soon after, Ugarte capitalised on a gap in Everton's defence, netting a brilliant strike to make it 2-2 and level the match. Late in the game, Everton were awarded a penalty after De Ligt was judged to have grabbed Young’s shirt, but following a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned, ensuring the match ended in a hard-fought draw.
