Thirty-two-year-old David de Gea left Manchester United four months ago after playing for the Red Devils for 12 seasons as a key player in goal and becoming captain. The Spanish goalkeeper is out of contract and after several months of negotiations failed to reach an agreement with the club who proposed a pay cut to his £375,000 a week.
Manager Erik ten Hag did not insist on the goalkeeper to stay as he wanted a goalkeeper with better foot skills and therefore signed Onana, who was in Ajax's squad when he coached them. The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper posted a photo on social media with current Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes with the headline "together again".
De Gea has rejected proposals from Arabia this summer and remains a free agent since leaving Old Trafford. There have been rumours of his retirement if he does not receive a proposal to become first-choice at a 'major' club.
The photo shows many fans calling for the goalkeeper's return to the United goal after the controversy surrounding the position in Ten Hag's team due to the mistakes Onana has made this season. The Spanish goalkeeper used his return to Manchester to meet Spanish defender Reguilon and other former Manchester United teammates and to return to his home for a few days.
