Barcelona have been carrying out a load of renewals for their women and men. Some of these things have not been able to be completed such as Gavi's renewal due to salary cap rules. Now, according to 'Que T'hi Jugues', the same has happened to Marcos Alonso, who has just extended his stay at Barcelona until 2024.
'Cadena SER' reports that La Liga believe that Barcelona will exceed the salary cap this summer so they have not allowed the renewal to be processed. This does not mean that it will not be possible later on. It just means that the board will have to wait for some time before the deal can be completed. The deal itself is not under threat.
But then, why have the club been able to announce these renewals if they still cannot formally process them? It is because one thing is an agreement has been reached with the footballer and another is for the league to register it. Therefore, Barca, aware that it is only a setback, will wait calmly for it to be resolved.
Marcos Alonso has earned the right to stay at Barcelona in a season in which he has made 20 appearances so far, 12 of them as a starter. His versatility has been key in moments in which his coach has needed replacement to cover the gaps left by a defender hit by injuries at certain periods of the season. His good performances when he has been asked to carry out this role has meant he has been given approval to stay.
