Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca believes the key to unlocking Jadon Sancho's full potential at Stamford Bridge is to make him feel "loved". The player joined Chelsea on deadline day, penning the contract for a loan deal with an obligation to buy for the next summer window, which will cost £23million.
After a nightmare spell at Manchester United, Sancho got off to the best possible start at the Bridge with an impressive debut in the match against Bournemouth on Saturday. The player came off the bench to feature for 45 minutes - providing the assist for teammate Christopher Nkunku in the match's only goal - which resulted enough to name him Man of the Match.
Speaking about Sancho’s performance after the game, the Chelsea boss said: “Very happy, very happy for him. He was very good, I think Joao [Felix] was very good and Christoph scored but was also very good. Jadon helped us a lot,” Maresca said. “What he did tonight is exactly what we expected from him. I know Jadon very well because I watched him many times in the past and I know what he can give us.
“I said already when we brought in Jadon that the reason why is because we were looking for another winger like Noni [Madueke]. Noni is doing that on the right side, winning 1v1s, creating chances, scoring goals and we were looking for the same on our left side with Jadon. We already have Mischa [Mudryk] there, Pedro is playing there but it's good to have both wingers they can give us this kind of options.”
With the winger's horrid time at United after falling out with ten Hag, the Italian manager was asked about the significance of a positive relationship with fans and staff for Jadon Sancho. Maresca took the opportunity to fire a subtle dig at the Dutch coach, insisting that the former Borussia Dortmund">Borussia Dortmund man needs a sense of love to be able to show what he is truly capable of.
“It's very important. I have a feeling that Jadon is a guy that needs love. This is what I think when I spoke with him before he join us. Also I know he has the desire to show the player he is, but for me, it is just to enjoy football. This is the reason why they play. They are happy and want to play football, they want to enjoy football and then because they are good, they are going to do good things.”
