Lothar Matthaus, a former German player, described Leo Messi's 8th Ballon d'Or as a " farce" despite being a fan of the Argentinian because he believes it was quite clear that Erling Haaland should have picked up the award. He alluded to his good performance over the last 12 months, although, since last year, the 'France Football' award looks at what happened during the most recent season, not the year.

Former German international Lothar Matthaus called Lionel Messi's eighth Ballon d'Or award a " farce" despite declaring himself a fan of the Argentinian and said the winner should have been Norway's Erling Haaland.
"Haaland has done better than Messi throughout the year. This award is not deserved and it proves that the WC means more than anything. For me, no one was better than Haaland, he has been the best in the last twelve months."
"He won important titles with Manchester City and set goalscoring records. It was a farce even though I have always been a Messi fan," Matthaus told Sky Deutschland.
