Kylian Mbappe, who was unable to finish the first half against Atalanta because of a muscle problem, will undergo an MRI scan on Thursday as Real Madrid hope he does not suffer an injury beyond an overload that will not prevent him from playing in upcoming matches.
After scoring the opener in Tuesday's game, Mbappe felt muscular discomfort in the back of his left thigh and limped off the Gewiss Stadium pitch after 35 minutes. The first examination by Real Madrid's doctors left the optimism conveyed by Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti in his post-match statement. "It's just a discomfort in the hamstring," he told reporters.
After returning from Italy in the early hours of the morning, Real Madrid released their squad on Wednesday and decided to rest Mbappe to allow the inflammation in the affected area to subside. An MRI scan will be carried out at the Valdebebas training complex on Thursday, the day the team returns to training, to confirm whether the French forward is suffering from an injury.
Real Madrid are hopeful that the muscle discomfort is just an overload and that Mbappe will stop in time before suffering a small tear. He would then be out of Saturday's La Liga game against Rayo Vallecano and could be included in the squad for the Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar.
