French outlet 'L'Equipe' reveals that, two years ago, Kylian Mbappe had a reached a verbal agreement to join Liverpool. The outlet reports that shortly after renewing his contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2024 - which included the option for a further year - the player requested to leave the club. The French captain reportedly felt betrayed by the club, who - according to a source from 'France Bleu' - had sold him a different project, one that promised him the signings of Manchester City's Bernardo Silva and - at the time - Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski to strengthen the squad and achieve the club's lifelong dream to conquer the Champions League.
The striker supposedly refused to take part in the 2022/2023 Ligue 1 opening match against Clermont - which ended 5-0 for the Parisians - as a means to push PSG executives to let him leave before the end of the transfer window. Two bids were reportedly received by the French club in that same window. One from Real Madrid and the other from Liverpool.
Reports suggest that the English club's bid to land the then-23-year-old was worth €200m. While PSG sporting director Henrique demanded double the amount, Mbappe had reportedly already reached an agreement with the Premier League side over a short-term contract, which would have given him the opportunity to join Real Madrid in the future, should he wish to. Though the deal never sealed, Mbappe's move to Real Madrid eventually happened in this year's summer window following the expiration of the player's contract with PSG.
Despite reports from 'L'Equipe', a source close to PSG denies the story, arguing that Liverpool did not have the sufficent funds to sign Mbappe.
