Argentina beat Brazil 0-1 in a World Cup qualifier. Before the start of the match there were clashes between fans of both countries with the police. The incident delayed kick-off and also led to Rodrygo Goes and Lionel Messi clashing.
Inter Miami's Argentinian star after the match criticised the behaviour of the police in the stands towards the fans saying that "a tragedy could have happened".
"We saw how (police) were hitting the people, it already happened in the Libertadores final," said Messi, referring to the scenes at the Maracana before Fluminense's win over Boca Juniors. "They were more focused on that than on the game," he added.
"We went to the locker room because it was the best way to calm everything down, a tragedy could have happened. We are a family. We decided to play to make situation more calm," claimed the Argentinian star.
The former Barcelona player also posted on his Instagram a few words about the match and the chaotic incidents in the stands: "Great victory in the Maracana although it will be marked by the repression of the Argentinians once again in Brazil. This can't be tolerated it's insane and it needs to end now!!"
In the middle of the chaos, the Argentine captain led his teammates to the dressing room. After 22 minutes with the match not having started, they came back on the pitch, warmed up for 3 minutes and the match was able to start normally.
