Messi self-critical despite win over Canada
Argentina captain Leo Messi appeared before the press after the victory in the 'Albiceleste's Copa America opener. Lionel Scaloni's No 10, despite having won, was self-critical of some clear chances that he believes the team should have converted.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi was delighted with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Canada at the start of the Copa America 2024 and, after the effort, said the achievement must be enjoyed. "We have to enjoy it because the rivals are going to look to play us differently," said the No 10 after the match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Messi, who turns 37 on 24th June, on Thursday became the player who has played the most games in the Copa America, 35, one more than Chile goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone. The Rosarino, who missed an incredible chance after an accurate pass from goalkeeper Emiliano 'Dibu' Martinez, set up Lautaro Martinez to make it 2-0.
Despite the win, it left Lionel Scaloni's side with one thing to work on ahead of Tuesday's second Group A game against Chile: "We have to be in control.
"I always say that the first game of any competition is difficult, but the most important thing is that we got the result. We had a couple of very clear chances that didn't materialise. They were an intense team with physically strong players who were quick on the counter. We knew it wasn't going to be easy and I think all the games in the Copa will be like this," he said in the mixed zone at the Mercedes Benz stadium.
Messi admitted, as did his coach Lionel Scaloni previously, that the state of the pitch did not favour them. "The pitch didn't help much either; the team, in general, put in a lot of physical wear and tear, but we have days to rest and prepare for Chile, which is going to be complicated too," he added.
