Mourinho could be Portugal boss without leaving Roma

'A Bola' have reported that Jose Mourinho is one of the main contenders to replace Fernando Santos as Portugal boss. He would not even need to leave his job at Roma, if the club understandably are not favourable to this. The Portuguese were knocked out by Morocco in the quarter-finals of the Qatar World Cup, which was a big upset.

What would happen if Mourinho was Roma and Portugal boss at the same time? According to 'A Bola', he is one of the contenders to replace Fernando Santos, and it has not been ruled out that he could combine the two jobs. The problem is that, understandably, his club would not be up for that, for obvious reasons. They hired him at the start of May 2021.
Thanks to his personality and experience of elite football, 'The Special One' is the main man which his country's federation have their eyes on to take over the national side after the defeat against Morocco in the quarter-final of the World Cup. After the African side beat the Spaniards on penalties, they went on to beat the Portugese, but in normal time.
For now, Santos' departure is not official, but it has been taken as red by the press. That is why names such as Mourinho's have been suggested to take over his spot. There are other similar situations, such as Gareth Southgate, who seems to have England's backing, but could be replaced by hopefuls such as Thomas Tuchel, Brendan Rogers or Mauricio Pochettino. We are still waiting to see who will replace Tite at Brazil.
If Mourinho were to sign for Portugal, he would start his tenure for the Euro's Qualifying campaign with a couple of games in March next year. He would go up against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg to get his spell underway. He would be expected to win both games, as both sides are, in theory, worse.
