Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman said on Monday that Virgil van Dijk - and Frenkie de Jong - left the Netherlands camp early due to a decision based on "medical grounds." The former Barcelona manager added on to his words on the Dutch captain on Tuesday.
"Virgil had some minor complaints, he already had that last week," Koeman explained. "He trained separately last week until Wednesday. Also considering the schedule that these types of players have to complete - he always plays everything. That is why we decided to send him back to the club."
The news rings alarm bells at Anfield, as it puts the defender's involvement in Liverpool's upcoming game against Southampton in doubt. That said, it is too early to judge whether Van Dijk will partake in Sunday's Premier League clash as his conditions are yet to be assessed by the club's medical team.
Despite Van Dijk's early return to England, Netherlands have one more game left in the Nations League before the end of the November international break as they face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday. Koeman's men have already confirmed their place in the Nations League's last-eight thanks to their recent win over Hungary.
