Newcastle United have confirmed that Joelinton has successfully undergone surgery following an injury sustained last month that was expected to keep the player out for the season.
The Brazilian player suffered a thigh problem during Newcastle's FA Cup win over bitter rivals Sunderland in early January.
"Newcastle United can confirm that Joelinton has successfully undergone surgery on a thigh injury sustained earlier this month. The midfielder will now commence a period of rehabilitation overseen by the club’s medical team and is expected to return to action in May 2024, said the club on its official website.
"Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Joelinton a speedy recovery," concluded the club statement. The 27-year-old midfielder has just 18 months remaining on his contract with the Magpies and a successful outcome to the surgery could mean he could still play for the club again this season.
However, if Eddie Howe's side do not reach an agreement with the Brazil international on a contract extension, the St James' Park outfit could look for a way out before his contract expires so that he does not leave the club on a free transfer.
