Tuesday was a tremendously bitter day for the Brazilian national team. In addition to the defeat against Uruguay, they saw their captain cry. A bad fall after a jump when fighting for a ball once again halted Neymar's career, and the pain he was already showing was already a sign of something serious. Subsequent medical tests confirmed that the striker had torn the cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee. A misfortune that will keep him out for the rest of the season.
At 31 years of age and with a journey that had only just begun in Saudi Arabia, football has once again turned its back on Neymar. Just a few months after recovering from another ailment he had been carrying since the beginning of the year with PSG, he has been suffering year after year from muscle and ankle tears and sprains that have prevented him from finishing a season in good condition.
It is this frustration that is at the heart of the footballer from Mogi das Cruzes. He said so himself on his various social media profiles, including Twitter and Instagram, where he spoke openly of the deep regret he is suffering. "It's a sad moment, or worse. I know I'm strong, but this time I'm going to need my family and friends even more," he wrote.
"It's not easy to go through an injury and surgery, so imagine going through all this again after four months of recovery," Neymar continued. On 19th February, he sprained his ankle in a match between Paris Saint-Germain and Lille after a sensational first few months of the campaign in which he had 18 goals and 16 assists. That led to a hamstring injury that prevented him from playing again until 3rd August, in a friendly for the French side before his move to Al-Hilal, and even then he had to be sidelined again for a while as he continued to struggle.
The recovery time for such an injury is around eight months, a period in which his club will play in the AFC Champions League. Meanwhile, Brazil still have to play the November double-header of the South American qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina, and from 20th June to 14th July they will play the Copa America 2024 in the United States. This could be the striker's main objective, but it is too early to talk about it and for the moment his presence is in serious jeopardy.
"I have faith, too much, but I put all my strength in God's hands so that he can renew mine. Thank you for the messages of support and affection," added Neymar, who has received a flood of encouragement from his fans.
