After playing the full extent of the match between Athletic Bilbao and AZ Alkmar in the Europa Leage on Thursday, Nico Williams suffered an injury, which saw him miss out on La Liga action on Sunday as Girona beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1. Ahead of the clash, the Spanish club revealed that the winger sustained a sacroiliac injury via a medical statement on Saturday.
The player has now been called up by Luis de la Fuente for Spain's upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Serbia, though the Williams' participation in the games remains a question mark as the Spanish national team medical staff await to assess the player's condition. Atheltic Bilbao issued a statement on Tuesday explaining the situation for the 22-year-old and alerting the Spanish Federation.
"Athletic Club issued a medical report to the RFEF on Saturday morning regarding the physical condition of Nico Williams, following the left sacroiliac injury that left him out of the squad for the last LaLiga match against Girona FC. The injury occurred after a knock during the first half of the Europa League match. The player played the entire match and was instrumental in the victory over AZ Alkmaar," the statement reads.
"Now, and following the established protocol, the medical services of the Spanish national team are studying the evolution of the Athletic Club player's injury to assess whether he is fit to continue in the training camp and be available for the two matches, or one of them, of the UEFA Nations League against Denmark (12th October in Murcia) and Serbia (15th October in Cordoba)".
