Barcelona has announced on Monday that Aitana Bonmati, whose contract was expiring on the 30th of June 2025, will continue to be a Barca player at least untill 2028.
The current Ballon d'Or - who is also the favourite to claim it back this year - has accepted the club's offer, despite having many other offers on the table, and will see her stay in Catalunya extend to three more seasons.
The club announced the renewal of the midfielder after she penned the contract in the presence of Barcelona President Joan Laporta and Sporting Director - in charge of the women's team - Xavi Puig at the headquarters.
In a statement released by the club, the Catalan player explained that she felt "pleased to proceed her career at the club" and begin her thirteenth season wearing the 'Blaugrana' shirt.
"At the end of the contract, it will be 16 years. There is nothing else to say from someone that grew up 'culé' since childhood, that has such a deep connection with these colours and wants to continue making history the club" she assured.
While sharing words of gratitude towards the president and the executive team, the midfielder stated that her priority was always to stay at Barca, her "home", despite negotiations taking long. "It was a negiotiations like others, with ups and downs, but i think that we understood one another very well".
Bonmati claims to be a very ambitious person, just like the rest of the squad, stating: "I always want more and I don't settle for anything," revealing that she will have to fight again for every trophy.
"I know that the club is making a strong commitment, and will continue to do so to allow us to compete for everything in the following years. We want to continue with our winning ways and reach the top with this badge," she added, before expressing her desire to be back at the Spotify Camp Nou as soon as possible. "I hope to experience great nights here in the future".
With the renewal, the number 14 'Blaugrana' will be the squad's highest paid footballer - accroding to 'Catalunya Radio' - and is the first of seven renewals, which Sporting Director Marc Vives is planning to make. The six include Gemma Font, Marta Torrejón, Keira Walsh, Ingrid Engen, Jana Fernández, and Irene Paredes.
Barcelona have now sealed the contract renewal of two key players of the squad in Aitana Bonmati - regarded as the future of the club - and captain Alexia Putellas - two-time Ballon d'Or winner - whose extension until 2026 was announced in May.
