Although everything he does for Argentina overshadows everything else, Emiliano Martinez's club career is more established than ever. So much so that the 32-year-old goalkeeper has renewed for four more seasons with Aston Villa, where he hopes to stay until 2029 in goal. This was announced by the player himself at an event before the club launched it through their social networks.
"Monchi and Damia (Vidagany) have made a great effort for me. Since I joined the club my dream was to be in the Champions League and we have achieved it, so I have decided to sign a new contract here," explained Dibu to the fans of the Birmingham club, with whom he qualified for Europe's top competition after finishing fourth.
"This club is growing, improving its stadium, the shop.... We are moving forward every year. As an international with Argentina I've already won everything, now I think I can win a trophy here. It's what this club is missing and I'm looking forward to seeing if next year we can achieve it," added the goalkeeper, a World Cup winner and two-time winner of the Americas with the Albiceleste.
The Mar del Plata native's career has skyrocketed since his arrival at Aston Villa, where he has just started his fifth season. El Dibu arrived in Europe in 2009, at the age of 16, after Arsenal noticed him after he shone in the South American Under-17 Championship in the summer. He joined the ‘Gunner’ youth academy from Independiente de Avellaneda and his career went from loan to loan without managing to establish himself in the London first team.
Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolves, Getafe and Reading were home to Emi Martinez for several years until 2019, when, following the retirement of Petr Cech, he was able to play 23 games under Unai Emery, Freddie Ljungberg and Mikel Arteta at the Emirates Stadium. After that, he signed for Aston Villa in 2020 and established himself as an eccentric, but agile and reliable goalkeeper. And of course, as all Argentinians and all Villans know, a specialist in penalties.
