Florence will be the city that will enjoy David de Gea. The Spanish goalkeeper, who has spent a whole year without competing at professional level, returns at 33 to compete in Serie A with Fiorentina.

The last two goals David de Gea conceded were scored by Ilkay Gundogan... but against Manchester City, not Barcelona. More than a year has passed since 3rd June 2023, when the Cityzens took on Manchester United in the FA Cup tie that Pep Guardiola lifted. By then, it was already an open secret that he was not going to renew and, therefore, he was free.
It was difficult to guess his decision to spend a whole year without a team. Whether due to a lack of offers or other reasons, the Spanish goalkeeper opted not to sign a new contract for the 2023-24 season. A stance that some took as the beginning of retirement, but De Gea has ruled it out: he has signed for Fiorentina and is embarking on a new journey in Italy.
He has had plenty of time to decide where he wanted to play after spending a whole year in the shadows. In fact, the goalkeeper has opted for the option of the 'Viola' team with less than a month to go before the end of the market. It is the alternative that has convinced him the most. He will sign for one year, until June 2025, with the option to extend his contract for another year.
Already a few days ago, before finalising this option at Fiorentina, his name was already linked with Italian football. It was Genoa who knocked on his door, but the negotiation, when it was already advanced, fell through and the team finally signed Gollini. The 'Viola' team did take up that option and brought in a goalkeeper with a lot of experience. At 33, he left England with 545 appearances for Manchester United, 415 of them in the Premier League. His time with the Spanish national team came to an end in 2021, but he played 45 games for 'La Roja'.
