After much tug of war, Sergi Roberto's renewal with Barcelona has finally become a reality. The home-grown player has signed until 30th June 2024, thus extending a contract that was due to expire in just four months' time.
The versatile 'Cule' player now has a termination clause of 400 million euros, as announced by the club. On the other hand, the club has not confirmed the condition that, according to several sources, the agreement could be extended for one more season. To do so, the player would have to play at least 45 minutes of 60% of the total number of matches played by Barca.
A few hours before the official announcement, Sergi Roberto was seen at the Barca facilities on his arrival, along with his wife, to sign the new deal. The move was originally planned for a few days ago, but the defeat to Almeria delayed everything.
Barcelona, in their statement, wanted to highlight the Barca DNA of a player who arrived to the youth ranks 17 years ago: "Sergi Roberto has spent 17 years of his life wearing the blaugrana jersey. He entered al Masia in 2006 from Nàstic Tarragona and rose through the ranks, eventually featuring for the reserves, managed at the time by Luis Enrique. He made his first team debut on 10th November 2010 in a Copa del Rey match against Ceuta.
Since his debut, the 31-year-old full-back has made a total of 339 official appearances for Barcelona, scoring 15 goals and providing 36 assists. Undoubtedly, the most special goal was the one he scored against PSG to confirm a historic comeback with that 6-1 win in the second leg of the 2016-17 Champions League round of 16.
