Olympique Marseille president Pablo Longoria has just announced at a press conference that Dimitri Payet will be leaving the club with one year remaining on his contract.
"It's a difficult moment. We called this press conference to announce that we had decided not to continue our relationship with Dimitri Payet. It's been many weeks of discussions. We've decided to go our separate ways," said the Marseille boss.
Having gone from undisputed starter to substitute in just a few months at Olympique Marseille, Payet had a complicated last season. Not part of Igor Tudor's plans, he played 27 games in all competitions, scoring 4 goals and providing 3 assists.
"I'd like to continue playing football. I'm coming off a very difficult season with very little playing time... It's going to be tough. I just want to play and enjoy myself on the pitch again. (...) The end of my career will be marked by my return here. To mark the occasion, we've discussed a tribute to be held here at the Velodrome with the people who have meant so much to me.
The 2016 European Championship runner-up returned to the club in January 2017 after two seasons with West Ham. The attacking midfielder has suitors in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, where several European footballers have chosen to continue their careers this summer.
