Chile coach Ricardo Gareca has announced his squad for the Copa America, which will be played next summer in the USA. The surprise inclusion of Luciano Cabral, a Coquimbo Unido player who is on probation for good behaviour, has been the surprise of the list.
The player was sentenced in 2019 to 10 years in prison after being convicted of a murder in Mendoza, Argentina. And despite being on parole, he is still awaiting a response from US authorities as to whether he will be able to enter the country for the tournament.
Luciano Cabral has made a total of 15 appearances for Coquimbo Unido this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist. This has been enough for his coach to forget about his extra-sporting problem and include him in the squad.
Cabral has already been called up to the Chilean U20 national team, as well as to Argentina's youth teams, as he has dual nationality. The 2024 Copa America could confirm his selection for the 'Roja'.
