For many football fans, fond memories can come to mind when someone mentions the word "penalty". Many of us have experienced that great feeling of seeing one of our team's players convert from 12 yards, or even do it in a decisive moment that can be worth a victory or even a trophy.
However, we sometimes take it for granted when the referee points to the penalty spot that our team is going to score when sometimes the reality can be cruel. A player taking a penalty is usually under a lot of pressure and distractions, so it is those with steel nerves and good technique who tend to convert more often than not.
Without going any further, Leo Messi, one of the greatest players our eyes have ever seen, has been criticised many times for missing decisive penalties that could have cost his teams or national team an elimination or a defeat. On the other hand, his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo, has always been better than the Argentinian in this aspect of the game, even at times having been called 'Penaldo'.
At BeSoccer Pro we have decided to analyse all the penalties taken in official club matches and both official and friendly national team matches over the last 5 years. Thanks to our large database we have discovered the penalty maestros of the top 5 leagues in Europe.
Unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo is at the top of the table with a whopping 43 goals from 12 yards out in the last five years. He is however, tied with Lazio striker Inmobile, who has also bagged himself the same number.
The five penalties the Portuguese star has scored for Al-Nassr have not been included here, as his move to the Saudi Pro-League took him out of Europe.
His former Manchester United team-mate Bruno Fernandes follows with 41, and the rest are just as well-known.
Cristiano Ronaldo: Juventus (29), Manchester United (4), Portugal (10). 43 goals.
Ciro Immobile: Lazio (41), Italy (2). 43 goals.
Bruno Fernandes: Sporting CP(13), Manchester United (25), Portugal (3). 41 goals
Harry Kane: Tottenham (25), England (15). 40 goals.
Neymar: PSG (23), Brazil (13). 36 goals.
Lewandowski: Bayern Munich (32), Barcelona (1), Poland (3). 36 goals.
Ben Yedder: Sevilla (4), Monaco (30). 34 goals
Jorginho: Chelsea (27), Italy (5). 32 goals.
