Some players spend their entire careers without ever getting a yellow card. But some will be lucky to go two consecutive matches without getting into the referee’s book.

Sometimes, it’s all down to a player’s role in the team, be it the defensive-minded midfielders committing tactical fouls to protect their defenses or the battle-hardened defenders who put their heart and soul into every tackle. Below are the Premier League’s bad boys who received the most cards in the 2022/23 season.

Joao Palhinha played 35 games for Fulham in the 2022/23 Premier League season, racking up a total of 3113 minutes in the process while only missing 3 matches. The Portugal international was an integral part of Marco Silva’s side that ended the 2022/23 season in the top-10 for the first time in over a decade. Unsurprisingly, Joao was the Premier League’s top offender, with 48 fouls committed throughout the campaign and 14 yellow cards received.

From a struggling Premier League striker to an outstanding box-to-box midfielder, Joelinton’s story was one of the highlights of the 2022/23 Premier League season. The Brazilian was once booed by his own fans and even received personal comments on social media before everything changed after Eddie Howe’s appointment in 2021. The Brazilian international was a huge asset to Newcastle United in the 2022/23 Premier League season, excelling in his new role as a box-to-box midfielder. However, his new place in Newcastle’s midfield also made him one of the most carded players in the 2022/23 season, with 12 bookings at the end of the campaign.

Ruben Neves recently completed a big-money move to Al-Hilal in a deal that will see him link up with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, N’golo Kante, and Kalidou Koulibali in the Saudi Pro League. He’s been one of Wolves’ best players in recent years, scoring memorable goals against top oppositions like Liverpool and Manchester United. The Portugal international maintained his impressive form throughout the 2022-23 season, becoming one of the bright sparks when Wolves struggled under Bruno Lage. Neves became an important player for Julen Lopetegui after the Spaniard took over as the new Wolves manager. He was also one of the players with the most cards in the 2022-23 season, ending the campaign with 11 yellow cards.

Nelson Semedo has been the preferred right back since Julen Lopetegui took over as the new Wolves head coach in 2022. And the Portuguese defender joined the list of the premier league players with the most cards with his 11 bookings in 36 appearances. Semedo committed 47 fouls in 2635 minutes of Premier League action, getting into the referee’s book more often than Brighton’s Moises Caicedo (10) and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher (10).

It’s impossible to be squeaky clean in the heart of an aging Liverpool midfield that struggled for the better part of the 2022/23 season. And that was the case for Fabinho, who found himself on the referee’s book 11 times in the 2022/23 season, completing the list of the top 5 players with the most cards in the Premier League. An integral part of Jürgen Klopp’s title-winning Liverpool side in 2019, the Brazilian could be heading to the Saudi Pro League if the recent rumors are anything to go by. If that happens, it will be the end of an incredible European career that has culminated in multiple trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, and League Cup.
