Mauricio Pochettino is on the verge of leaping international football. After accumulating experience with Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea at a club level, it has emerged that he has accepted a proposal from the United States Federation to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup.
The Americans' interest in him was leaked in the early hours of Wednesday morning when an 'ESPN' programme discussed his profile intending to move the consensus forward.
Earlier in the morning, journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the progress in the negotiations and also that the management who had contacted him had been considering various options. He was not the only one they had in mind for the job.
The man in charge is Matt Crocker, who has already worked at Southampton, so he has some connection with the coach's past. During his time with the Saints, he was in charge not only of transfer matters but also of youth development.
The signing of Mauricio Pochettino is an institutional response to the USA's disappointment at the Copa America. Christian Pulisic's side were eliminated in the group stage after losing 1-0 to Uruguay. The group had started the tournament by beating Bolivia 2-0 with a very good feeling but fell out in a matter of days.
