The Premier League is currently the best league in the world for many reasons. For the economic potential of the teams, for the equality when it comes to deciding the league title or simply for being the most eye-catching. And that, for neutral fans, is defined by the number of goals per game.
With 45 games remaining in the 2023-24 season, this season has become the highest-scoring in Premier League history in a 38-game campaign.
After Wednesday's matches, the Premier League has now reached 1,092 goals scored over the 34 games played, with the exception of some postponed fixtures. That is, in a total of 335 matches played.
This means that the average number of goals per game in the English competition this season is 3.25 goals, much higher than the 2.85 goals scored last season, the highest scoring season until then.
The Premier League, with 45 matches to play so far, has already broken a great record that makes its matches even more visible to the neutral fan.
The Premier League is the highest scoring competition of the 5 big European leagues. It is so in terms of total number of goals (1,092) and goals per game (3.25).
The closest competition in terms of goals per game is the Bundesliga, which has scored 859 goals but has only 18 teams in the top division. Thus, Germany averages 3.18 goals per game.
The other three competitions have seen their goal-scoring records drop dramatically. La Liga averages 2.61 for a total of 834 goals, a far cry from the 1,118 goals scored in 2016-17, the highest scoring season of the 21st century.
Even so, Spain is the country with the third highest number of goals per game this season. Particularly significant is the decline in Serie A, which has gone from averaging 3.06 in the 2020-21 season to 2.59 in the current campaign, the worst of the big five leagues.
Between Spain and Italy is France. Ligue 1 currently averages 2.60 goals per game for a total of 703, a far cry from the Bundesliga records with the same number of teams.
