Following in the footsteps of the Argentinian seniors, Uruguay's U-20s team took home to U-20s World Cup on Sunday night, beating Italy in the final. The president of the Uruguayan football association, Ignacio Alonso, took the moment to reply to comments made by French star Kylian Mbappe at the World Cup in December.
The World Cup runner-up had made comments about the level of South American football, saying "Argentina and Brazil don't play high level matches before qualifying for the World Cup. In South America, football isn't as advanced as in Europe. And that's why, when we look at the last World Cup, it's always the Europeans that win".
In response this weekend, Alonso declared "Mbappe made a mistake. We have to be more positive and think that we are very strong as a continent because football was born here".
"We have shown that we can be competitive and that we can win. We've undoubtedly beaten a powerful team, a team that beat Brazil. We beat countries from every continent. It's historic", he concluded.
