Raul Jimenez's sixth goal of the season in the Premier League came with an extra prize for the Fulham striker, who became the top Mexican goalscorer in the history of the English competition by equalling Chicharito Hernandez. Both now have 53 goals in the league and the Tepeji del Rio de Ocampo man adds this historic milestone to the one he already had, having long since become his country's player with the most appearances in the competition on the islands.
Raul Jimenez now only has to match the record of Chicharito Hernandez, who ended with 70 victories to the current Mexico international's 65 at the start of the day. Raul Jimenez also leads the way in the number of separate games he has scored with 49 and in attacking contribution, as his 73 goals generated far outstrips the 63 with which the historic Guadalajara striker left the competition.
The Fulham striker arrived in the Premier League in the 2018-19 season after an ill-fated first foray into European football at Atletico Madrid and a resurrection at Benfica, where he still served mostly as a substitute. It was at Wolves that he finally made his breakthrough with a very good first two seasons, scoring 17 and 27 goals respectively in official matches and the first 13 and 17 goals in the English regular competition.
Raul Jimenez made his Premier League debut on 11th August 2018 in a 2-2 draw between Wolves and Everton in which he also scored his first goal. After five seasons with the Molineux Stadium outfit, he joined Fulham in the European summer of 2023. His debut for the London side came on 12th August 2023 and curiously it was also against the Toffees, in a match in which he hit the woodwork and his team won 1-0. It took him a while to get his first goal, which came on 12th November 2023 against Aston Villa in a 3-1 defeat.
Season by season, 2019-20 is by far the striker's best season in the Premier League with the aforementioned 17 goals scored. He also scored 13 in 2018-19, 7 in 2023-24, 6 in 2021-22 and 4 in an injury-interrupted 2020-21, while he failed to score in 2022-23. This season he has already scored 6 goals with the one achieved this matchday.
In his day, Chicharito spent many more seasons in the English competition, although his role was less important and he did not have as much playing time as Raul Jimenez. The Guadalajara native joined Manchester United in 2010 and scored 13 (2010-11), 10 (2011-12), 10 (2012-13) and 4 (2013-14) goals for the Old Trafford outfit. He completed those figures with his goals at West Ham, where he scored eight (2017-18), seven (2018-19) and one (2019-20) respectively.
