After having announced his retirement from professional football at age 36, Real Madrid icon Marcelo was honoured at the Santiago Bernabeu in the preview to the Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid on Saturday night.
The Brazilian defender made his way onto the pitch after Kylian Mbappe had collected his La Liga Player of the Month prize for January to be greeted with cheers from his former supporters and teammates.
Marcelo was gifted a framed Real Madrid shirt with his name and everyone's signatures on the back, handed by none other than Luka Modric. The rest of the squad then joined the ex-player to take group pictures ahead of kick-off.
Marcelo spent 16 years with the Real Madrid outfit but terminated his career at boyhood club Fluminense. He is the third most-capped foreign player in Real Madrid's history.
He arrived at the Spanish capital at 18 in 2006, leaving in 2022 at 36 after making 546 appearances and winning 25 trophies with 'Los Blancos' - 5 Champions Leagues, 4 Club World Cups, 3 UEFA Super Cups, 6 Liga titles, 2 Copa del Reys and 5 Spanish Super Cups.
