Real Madrid's English midfielder Jude Bellingham received the Golden Boy award for the best Under-21 talent of the year in Turin on Monday at a gala organised by the 'Tuttosport' newspaper.
Born on 29 June 2003, Bellingham inherited the trophy that Spaniard Pablo Paez Gavira 'Gavi' lifted last year and received the award. He was accompanied to the gala by a Real Madrid delegation led by Emilio Butragueno, the club's director of institutional relations, and his mother.
For the first time in history, a Real Madrid player received the trophy. In addition, also for the first time, he received the Golden Boy from the public, so he left Turin with two trophies.
“Thank you. I am very excited to join this group of special players. I am very happy to win Golden Boy. This is a result of playing with great players. I have played and I am playing with amazing players. I would like to thank them the most. I want to help my team and country to be the best. That’s what it takes to be the best player in the world. I just want to help my team be better, that matters,” said Bellingham.
“Real Madrid is the best team ever. I am happy to have the opportunity to play here, you don’t get to do that every day. It is such an honour to join this list. I would say Wayne Rooney is the one that motivated me the most from the Golden Boy list,” claimed Real Madrid midfielder.
"I'm very lucky to be playing football because I don't have a clue what I'd be doing if I wasn't. Probably at university, messing around!", he added. The Real Madrid star, with a record 97% of the vote, with 45 of the 50 judges giving him the highest score and the remaining five the second highest, won the Golden Boy ahead of German Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala and Dutch RB Leizpig midfielder Xavi Simons.
Bellingham's impact has been undeniable and more than resounding at Real Madrid, where he has so far amassed a total of 15 goals in 17 appearances.
