Real Madrid's Alaba suffers relapse of calf injury
'Marca' reports that David Alaba has suffered a recurrence of his soleus muscle injury. That kept him out of the Copa del Rey quarter-final against Atletico Madrid. On Friday morning, Real Madrid's coaching staff knew about his injury and more tests will be carried out to determine the extent of it. In any case, Carlo Ancelotti has lost an important player again.

Since the turn of the year, David Alaba has only played in the La Liga defeat to Villarreal. Apart from that, he has been out with a right soleus muscle injury. It seemed like he would play in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey against Atletico Madrid. However, he was left out at the last minute and, a day later, 'Marca' says that he has once again felt pain in the affected area.
At the moment, Real Madrid have not published a medical report, but they will likely publish one soon. The club's doctors examined his injury on Friday morning and he trained separately from the rest of the team. That meant he did the same as Tchouameni and Carvajal while Lucas Vazquez, Mendy and Rodrigo stayed indoors at the training ground.
The former Bayern Munich man had been a key player for the coach in the first half of the season. For example, at the beginning of October, Madrid faced Celtic, Rayo Vallecano and Cadiz in the space of eight days. The Austrian started all of those and Ancelotti's decision not to give him some rest, may have caused the problem.
It is unlikely Alaba will recover in time for the visit of Real Sociedad in two days time, but Madrid will need to be 100% at the end of February. Madrid will travel to Liverpool on 21st February in the Champions League last 16 first leg. Then, they will host Atletico in La Liga on 26th February before travelling to play Real Betis on 5th March.
