Mestalla is once again in the spotlight of criticism for the behaviour of some of its fans. Specifically, two people sitting in the stands at the Valencia ground insulted Takefusa Kubo and Ander Barrenetxea.
The Real Sociedad players received racist insults while they were warming up on the touchline, before entering last Sunday's match at Mestalla.
Kubo, a Japanese player, was told: "Chinese, open your eyes", alluding to his race. "Chinese, you are Chinese. F*ck the stick, f*ck you, stick it up your ass," he added as he warmed up.
More serious were the insults to Ander Barrenetxea: "Etarra, son of a b*tch. Go and plant bombs, you son of a b*tch. Then go live off Spain, you son of a bitch. Let them put a bomb on you and let your head explode".
Valencia, once the insults were made public, issued a statement in which it expressed "its rejection and firm condemnation" of the words received by the players, stressing that it was an "isolated incident" and that "this type of behaviour is unacceptable and has no place in football stadiums or in society".
