After being suspended by the Refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) on Monday, David Coote has now been dumped by UEFA. The referee was sanctioned as he appeared in a leaked video, in which he foul-mouthed former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
Coote was videod calling the incoming Red Bull head of football operations a "German c***" in a footage that appears to be recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the 'Mirror'. The PGMOL have confirmed they are conducting a full investigation on the matter.
The referee was due to be on duty during the upcoming internationals, as he was set to officiate in the Nations League. However, following the incident the European governing body UEFA have followed the PGMOL suit and Coote has now been stood down.
Coote is regarded as one of England’s best officials, though his career is now hanging by a threat as he awaits the outcome of the investigation. He could see himself get sacked after reports claim that he privately admitted to the footage being genuine.
He most recently refereed Liverpool's 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday. Beyond the English top flight, he was last on VAR duty in the Champions League during the clash between PSV Eindhoven and Girona. It remains to be seen whether Saturday's Premier League clash will be the last of his career.
