Man United's underwhealming display against Tottenham was not appreciated by Rio Ferdinand. The former Red Devil said that although he believes the decision to give Bruno Fernandes the red card was wrong, Man United gave an "embarassing" performance that should not be swept under the rug.
Following United's defeat on Sunday, the former defender shared a video on his official X account. "We’ll get to the red card in a minute but Van de Ven ran through the whole team and I look at it, and just think.... but it happened midweek as well, Ferdinand began. “Where’s the pride man? I just don’t know. That fight don’t seem where it should be".
"The Bruno red card I think is p*** poor as well. I think it’s a p*** poor red card. In no day and age should that ever be a red card. A straight red card? No way, I can’t have it," he said. “But do not let that distract from the fact that we were terrible. We were an embarrassment today. The red card shouldn’t be an excuse for anybody at Man Utd now. It shouldn’t be an excuse for anyone at the football club. We were terrible. We were terrible to watch. It was a terrible kind of representation of who were are and what we are right now. Giving the ball away constantly. I’m ranting here but I can’t help it. I’ve sat and watched the game and just thought what the hell are we?"
Ferdinand was not the only one to slam the referee's decision, as Fernandes himself also expressed his disapproval in a post-match interview. “I don’t take [the decision] as everyone wants to see it, not with my studs. I take him with my ankle,” he said. “He [Maddison] said it’s a foul but never a red card, that’s what he said. You can see it’s never a red card - we have to look at many other incidents, I get kicked and never see the red card coming so quick.”
