The controversy of the 'Vinicius case' continues. After everything that has happened after Vinicius Jr was the victim of racist abuse from fans in the Mestalla, Valencia asked his teammate Rodrygo on Thursday for a public clarification and apology for his statement, while away on international duty with Brazil.
The statement in question was one where Rodyrgo stated the whole stadium was shouting racist insults at his teammates. But shortly after the communication from Valencia, the Madrid player did make a statement on his social media profiles.
Rodrygo backed down from his statement and said that he only meant to refer to the people in the stadium who were shouting abuse at Vinicius, not all the Valencia fans in the stadium. The forward also showed his respect to the Valencia fanbase and made an appeal to end racism.
Rodyrgo's statement:
"I have the utmost respect for the fans and for Valencia F.C. Just as in the same press conference I indicated that Spain is not a racist country, I only meant to refer to those people in the stadium who behaved badly towards Vini, not to the fans as a whole.
I understand football as a sport where the game, joy, respect, sportsmanship, an example of values, friendship, companionship and peaceful coexistence are paramount. I am here with my national team to fight against racism. It is time to put an end to racism. To this scourge. It is not enough to condemn. We must act. No to racism".
