Rubiales offered UEFA chief Ceferin a jersey signed by Leo Messi and Pique in leaked audios
'The Objective' on Wednesday morning published a series of text and audio messages between former RFEF president Luis Rubiales, former Barcelona player Gerard Pique, Inter Miami's Leo Messi and UEFA chief Alexander Ceferin. In their talks, they are looking for ways to redress the decline in the salaries of players like the two just mentioned as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

In 2020, during the economic blow of the coronavirus pandemic to football and the world at large, former RFEF president Luis Rubiales negotiated with his UEFA counterpart, Alexander Ceferin, that half of the 4% of the television rights for matches in the European institution's competitions - the Champions League, Europa and Conference League - would go towards compensating the salaries of footballers whose wages had been hit hardest by COVID-19.
The talks have come to public attention thanks to a series of leaks from 'The Objective', which, on Wednesday morning, published some text and audio messages between the former head of the RFEF, the head of the continental body, former player Gerard Pique and his former team-mate Leo Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami. During the conversation, however, both were at Barcelona.
Following the proposal mentioned in the first paragraph of this article, the 4%, Rubiales took it upon himself to speak to Ceferin and keep Pique informed, who in turn informed Messi of the situation. At one point a video call was arranged between the four of them to discuss the matter. The Argentinian was concerned about his lack of English, but his friend reassured him that he would translate anything the Slovenian articulated.
After the meeting, which took place on 14th April at around 18:45 CEST and lasted about an hour, whatsapps were exchanged between the participants to catch up, according to 'The Objective'. Pique thanks Ceferin for his commitment, Ceferin tells Rubiales that he will have an answer to his offer the following week... and Rubiales calls on Pique and Messi to present the UEFA president with a signed shirt.
