Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah will be out for 3-4 weeks with a hamstring strain.
The Egyptian picked up the injury in his side´s second Africa Cup of Nations match and, although initially thought to be out for only Egypt´s next two games, it has now been confirmed that the injury is worse than expected and he could miss the rest of the tournament.
"He is expected to return in three to four weeks if all goes well. It will go well because of how he has treated his body before," Pep Lijnders, assistant to Jürgen Klopp, who usually speaks to the press ahead of League Cup games such as Wednesday´s clash with Fulham, said on Tuesday.
In a statement released on Monday, Liverpool confirmed that the injury "is worse than expected" and that the Egyptian will return to England on Wednesday to begin rehabilitation.
"Salah will begin work immediately with the medical staff with the aim of being back as soon as possible and giving him the opportunity to compete again in the Africa Cup should Egypt continue to progress in the tournament," it said.
With the final scheduled for 8 February, Salah is unlikely to be fit in time should the Egyptians go all the way to the final match.
