France coach Didier Deschamps spoke at a press conference ahead of their 2024 EURO qualifier against Gibraltar about the difference in Arsenal centre-back William Saliba's role at club level compared to the national team.

William Saliba has become one of the most important players in an Arsenal side that is once again a regular contender for the Premier League title. Much of the evidence of this is that the Gunners were top of the table for much of last season, but eventually lost the title to Manchester City after dropping points in several key games, something that coincided with the centre-back's absence through injury.
However, the former Olympique Marseille player's role is quite different for his national team than it is for his club. While the 22-year-old defender is a regular in the Gunners' starting XI, he has made just two appearances for 'Les Bleus' this year.
France coach Didier Deschamps spoke about Saliba's different role in the national team and encouraged him to 'take the next step' after his incredible form for London.
"At international level, he hasn’t always found himself in the best conditions in matches where I’ve rotated a lot. He isn’t in the same psychological situation with his club, where he doesn’t ask himself if he’ll play at the weekend," he said.
"When he has game time with us, he tells himself he needs to play well because there are others behind him. He is not in a psychological situation that is the same as at his club. He has everything he needs to take the next step," concluded the French coach on the matter.
