Former Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has hinted at the possibility of Bayern Munich's on-loan Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nubel replacing Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who has a long-term injury following a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee, in goal for the German national team.
Speaking to German public television's ‘Sportschau’ portal, the former Bayern Munich player assessed "how Nubel played" at Stuttgart last season and, he said, that "even if you look to the future, he will definitely have the best options" and expressed his confidence in him until Ter Stegen comes back.
Asked about the possibility of a hypothetical return of Manuel Neuer for the list that coach Julian Nagelsmann will release on Thursday, Schweinsteiger said that, as a fan, "you always have a little hope that Manu will be called up and say 'yes', because he just has an aura in goal that influences the opposition".
"He's an incredibly good goalkeeper and a leader, so it would be a safe bet to have him in the back of the net. But I don't think that will happen and I guess Nübel will be in goal," he said of his former Bayern and national team-mate.
