Yann Sommer said on Friday that he sees Italy as favourites for Saturday's round of 16 match, but said his side are ready to cause them problems and can do so if they repeat the performance they showed in the group stage.
"I don't think you can say that, we are playing against the reigning European champions," the goalkeeper said when asked at a press conference if the favourites were not Switzerland in light of the recent performances of the two sides.
"I see Italy as favourites. They are European champions and have won the World Cup. But we are ready and we can cause them problems," said the goalkeeper.
According to Sommer, his team managed to perform well defensively in the group stage, which meant that opponents had few chances to score.
"If we can do that again, we'll create problems for them," he said. The goalkeeper admitted that it can be an advantage for him to know many of the opposition's attacking players from having played in Serie A.
"Yes, it can be a small advantage, but the decisive thing is what happens on Saturday. A lot of times, in a game like this, it's all about the little details, the form you have on the day," he said.
