Woong-Jung Son, father of South Korean footballer Heung-Min Son, has been questioned by authorities following allegations that he and two other coaches allegedly physically and psychologically abused a minor enrolled in their well-known football academy in the Asian country.
According to unnamed sources quoted by Yonhap news agency, a team representing the prosecutor's office questioned the three in Chuncheon (about 75 kilometres northeast of Seoul), where the Son Academy is located.
The same sources also indicated that one of the two coaches accused by the child's parents is the older brother of the Tottenham Hotspur striker, Heung-Yoon Son.
The parents of the alleged victim filed a complaint after discovering that their son, after returning from a spring camp in Japan's Okinawa prefecture, had a scar on his thigh that was allegedly caused by one of the school's coaches hitting him with a corner flag as punishment for failing to perform physically.
The young player also accused Son of verbally berating him for mistakes made during training and another coach of hitting him on different parts of his body while he was in the academy dormitories.
Police in Gangwon province, where the Son Academy is located, referred the case to the Public Prosecutor's Office in April, while the South Korean captain's father has publicly denied all allegations.
