Spain are aiming for a historic summer. After winning the European Championship on 14th July, less than a week ago, they will be looking for the double in Paris with gold at the Olympic Games.
From the team that won the Berlin Olympics against Germany, two of them will be back at the Games. Both Alex Baena and Fermin, both already with the U23 team, want to make European football history.
Winning gold would not only round off a perfect summer, but also make them the second players in history to achieve the Euro-Olympic Games double in the same summer.
So far, only one player has been present in the winning squads of both tournaments, just 40 years ago. That was the French goalkeeper Albert Rust.
After winning the 1984 European Championship on 27th June, precisely against Spain, in a tournament in which he did not play a single minute, he was a starter and very important in the gold medal won in Los Angeles 84 on 11th August of the same year.
Now, in 2024, two Spanish players hope to repeat Rust's feat. Both Baena and Fermin played some minutes in the European Championship. They are expected to be starters under Santia Denia in the Olympics.
