Sporting CP announced on Monday that former Valencia player Joao Pereira will be their new coach, replacing Ruben Amorim, who has joined Manchester United.
Pereira, 40, who until now coached Sporting Portugal's reserve team, will take charge of the first team, the Portuguese league leaders with 11 wins from 11 games, according to a statement sent by the club to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM).
Joao Pereira's coaching career has always been linked to Sporting, both on the bench of the Under-23s and the reserve team. As a player, his career began at arch-rivals Benfica and, after spells at Gil Vicente and Braga, he joined Sporting, who, in 2012, transferred him to Valencia, where he spent two seasons.
The 40-times capped Portuguese international returned to Sporting twice, first in 2015-2016 and then in 2020-21, the season in which he ended his career and won the league title for the club under former teammate Ruben Amorim.
