Sporting CP decided to pay tribute to the biggest star of their academy Cristiano Ronaldo in their new kit. Their third kit also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Jose Alvalade stadium.
The new shirt has the Portuguese club crest on the left side while the right side has the initials 'CR7'. It's dark green with gold details. This shirt is reminiscent of the shirt worn by the squad on 6th August 2003 when they faced Manchester United at the inauguration of their current stadium.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who was just 18, played an important role in Sporting's 3-1 victory and surprised Alex Ferguson, who took him to Old Trafford a few days later.
The Portuguese star started playing at Sporting's academy, where he trained and made his debut as a professional footballer. Ruben Amorim's side changed the name of their training complex to Cristiano Ronaldo Academy "in honour of the man who became the greatest Portuguese player of all time".
