There are images that unwittingly carry with them a beastly poetic charge. Old Trafford, like Manchester United, took on water (literally) as it consummated a defeat to Arsenal that leaves the Red Devils on the brink of their worst ever season in the current Premier League.
Arsenal kept their Premier League title dreams alive by ending an Old Trafford hoodoo to grind out a 1-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday to move back top of the table.
The Manchester sky began to thunder and several flashes of lightning dazzled the cameras as the match was ending on Sunday. Explosions from the discharges sent spectators at Old Trafford jumping as the rain began to fall in torrential downpours.
Media and fans posted a multitude of photographs and videos on social media of how the rain quickly formed rivers of water and waterfalls falling from the roofs and stands at Old Trafford. Supporters were outraged by the severe leaks that made many of the staircases impracticable.
