Atletico Madrid have announced on Monday that they have suspended as a precautionary measure the member of the supporters' stand who, on 27 April, during the La Liga match against Athletic Club de Bilbao at the Metropoliano stadium, made racist remarks towards the player Nico Williams.
"Following the identification by the police of the person responsible for the alleged racist shouting recorded in the referee's report and in the police report of the match against Athletic Club on 27 April, and the verification by the club that he is a paid-up member of the Supporters' Stand, Atletico Madrid, applying its internal regulations, has decided to suspend his membership indefinitely while his case is resolved by the competent sanctioning bodies," says the statement from the club.
"The club's internal regulations classify as very serious misconduct those offences that deteriorate the image, prestige and social consideration of Club Atletico Madrid and that go against the commitment of this club in its rejection and opposition to any form of verbal or physical violence and to any racist, xenophobic or intolerant act".
On 27 April, Athletic Club Bilbao's Nico Williams heard racist sounds when he went to take a corner kick in the match between his team and Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano.
As a result, the Competition Committee announced that Atletico Madrid will be sanctioned with the partial closure of the south end of the stadium for the next two league matches against Celta and Osasuna. Atletico appealed the sanction and is waiting to know whether or not its appeal will be accepted.
