Raphael Varane believes that his manager's choice to strip Harry Maguire of the captaincy and replace him with Bruno Fernandes shows the right character that he wants to inspire in his team. The defender praised the Man United coach for his determination and ability to lead by example, which has given the Red Devils a good connection with their manager.

It's a safe bet to say that overall, Erik ten Hag's first season with Manchester United was a success. The Red Devils finished 3rd in the Premier League, returning to the Champions League, and although he had to watch the departure of long-time keeper David De Gea, the Dutchman has managed to secure the signing of Inter Milan's goalkeeper Andre Onana as replacement.
That's not to say that he hasn't had to make some difficult decisions however. Ten Hag made the decision to strip Harry Maguire, who had occupied a very minor role last season, of the captaincy and replace him with Bruno Fernandes, a choice which was praised by defender Raphael Varane.
"He wants a team with character and he's the leader so he has to show it himself", the Frenchman told 'ESPN'. "He's not scared to take these decisions and take that responsibility. That is what we expect from the manager. He did it so I think, with things like this, you show by example".
The 30-year-old accredited Ten Hag's determination and clear vision for United success last season: "He knows exactly what he wants. He's shown that determination and from the first day we've known exactly what we've had to do and where he wants to go. It's all clear for the players and for the team and we have a good connection with the manager".
